
We already knew microplastics were turning up in our food, our water, even the air we breathe. Now there’s a twist nobody saw coming: these tiny plastic fragments floating overhead are actually helping warm the planet.
Colored microplastic particles absorb sunlight and trap heat, making a measurable contribution to global warming. The research was led by Drew Shindell, a professor of Earth science at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, working with a team from Fudan University in China.
Scientists have known for a long time that floating particles, aerosols, can mess with the climate. Soot is the textbook case. It’s packed with black carbon, one of the most powerful warming agents we know of. Microplastics simply weren’t part of that conversation before this study came along.
“This research expands the family of aerosols that are actually causing warming, and that makes [microplastics] a particularly good target” for climate action, Shindell said.
Earlier climate models treated airborne microplastics as essentially colorless. Colorless particles tend to reflect sunlight back into space, producing a slight cooling effect. Under that old assumption, microplastics barely mattered for climate purposes.
Shindell’s work throws that assumption out entirely, and the whole difference comes down to something almost embarrassingly simple: color.
Using computer simulations paired with lab experiments, the team dug into how light and heat actually behave around microscopic plastic fragments. They found that airborne microplastics come in a wide range of colors, and those colors often become more intense as the plastic ages and weathers.
That coloring is exactly what gives the debris its ability to trap heat in the first place.
The scale of it is what really stands out. Pigmented microplastics soak up roughly 16 percent as much heat as black carbon does, which is enough to put them squarely on the list of aerosols worth worrying about.
Shindell puts it in concrete terms: airborne microplastics are currently producing about as much warming as running 200 coal-fired power plants every year.
Without real intervention – cutting plastic use and waste and actually improving how plastic gets managed and recycled – plastic leakage into the environment could jump 50 percent above 2020 levels, hitting 30 million tons by 2040.
