World’s first electric tanker launched in Japan

03 Jan, 2022

Japanese shipbuilding company Koa Sangyou launched the world's first electric tanker.

The ceremony took place at a shipyard in Kagawa Prefecture. The ship “Asahi” is named after the company Asahi Tanker, by order of which it was built.

The length of the tanker is 62 meters. The vessel is equipped with lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 3480 kilowatts and is capable of covering a distance of 150-180 kilometers, and it takes about 10 hours to fully charge.

It is planned that from March 2022 the tanker will be used for refueling large transoceanic vessels in Tokyo Bay.

Earlier it was reported that the Zvezda shipyard began construction of the second LNG carrier of ice class ARC 7. Vessels of this type are distinguished by increased environmental safety – they use liquefied natural gas as the main fuel.
