Nuclea Energy Inc., an advanced nuclear technology company headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, and developer of the Morpheus microreactor, has announced that its subsidiary, Nuclea Energy Canada Inc., has entered into a definitive agreement with Moltex Energy Limited to acquire advanced nuclear technology assets spanning molten salt reactors and nuclear fuel recycling.

The portfolio is expected to include technology and development materials associated primarily with Moltex’s Stable Salt Reactor-Wasteburner (SSR-W), an advanced molten salt fast reactor, and its next-generation Waste To Stable Salt (WATSS) spent nuclear fuel recycling process.

Nuclea’s Morpheus microreactor is being developed as a compact, transportable and factory-fabricated platform for applications requiring secure and reliable power, including data centers, industrial facilities, defense infrastructure, mining operations and remote communities.

The proposed Moltex asset acquisition would expand Nuclea’s technology portfolio into advanced modular and potentially grid-scale nuclear generation, as well as spent-fuel recycling. The SSR-W is designed as a fast-spectrum advanced reactor with a targeted power output of 300–500 MW, using recycled nuclear material as fuel salt.

Unlike many molten salt reactor concepts, in which the fuel salt flows through the reactor core, the SSR-W holds its fuel salts within fuel pins, similar to the solid fuel used in conventional nuclear reactors.

All of these technologies remain under development and will require significant additional engineering, regulatory approvals, testing and capital investment before potential commercial deployment.
