In a speech on the occasion of World Food Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: “40% of humanity cannot afford a healthy diet, which is equivalent to 3 billion people. Hunger is increasing. The number of people suffering from malnutrition and obesity is increasing.”
Guterres indicated that the situation in this area has seriously deteriorated due to the Corona pandemic and the economic issues it caused, adding that about 140 million people in the world suffer from food shortages.
“At the same time, the methods we use to grow, eat and remove food are placing a heavy burden on our planet. They are creating an unprecedented burden on our resources, our climate and our environment, and costing us trillions of dollars.”
