Facebook Vows to Rely Completely on Renewable Energy by 2020

05 Sep, 2018

Since 2013, Facebook has signed contracts for over 3 gigawatts of new solar and wind energy, that includes over 2,500 megawatts in just the past 12 months.
In 2015, the company set a goal of supporting 50% of their working processes with renewable energy by 2018. The goals was achieved in 2017.

The company announced a message in which it outlined a new goal. « Today we take a commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 75% and powering our global operations with 100% renewable energy by the end of 2020. At the same time, Facebook stressed that the technology giant remains a supporter of the Paris climat agreement.

« If we are to stay within the 1.5 degree threshold that scientists say is crucial to avoid catastrophic climate change, we need many more companies stepping up to adopt aggressive renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals,” said Greenpeace Senior Corporate Campaigner Gary Cook .

However, many companies took the benchmark for clean energy. For example in October 2017 Amazon reported that it launched a wind farm in Texas, which will give up to a gigawatt of energy annually.

As a result of last year, only in the US corporate customers used 325 megawatts of installed capacity. Among the leaders were Amazon, Apple, Macy's, IKEA, General Growth Properties, Costco Wholesale, Kohl's, Prologis, Walmart and Target.
