Scientists from Zhejiang University in China have presented a brain-like computer based on a specialized neuromorphic chip with more than 2 billion artificial neurons.

"This is the world's first computer created on the principle of how the brain works, based on a specialized neuromorphic chip with more than 2 billion neurons," the university said in a statement.

The university noted that the computer is based on the Darwin III computing chip, created on the principle of the brain. In total, there are 960 such chips in the computer system.

"Wukong boasts a number of neurons approaching that of a macaque's brain, putting it one step closer to more advanced brain-based intelligence," the university said.

Using the powerful neural and synaptic resources of the system, scientists conducted a preliminary modeling of the brain of living organisms with different numbers of neurons, including the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, zebrafish, mice, and macaques.

According to scientists, the development "opens up a new approach to brain research", allows for a better understanding of how the brain works and reduces the need for real biological experiments.
